Data Redaction

Quick Definition

The process of removing or obscuring sensitive portions of data, typically replacing them with blocks, asterisks, or complete removal of the information.

What is Data Redaction?

Data Redaction is a data protection technique that removes or hides sensitive information by replacing it with visual indicators (asterisks, black boxes, [REDACTED] text) or completely eliminating it from the dataset. Unlike masking which creates realistic fake alternatives, redaction explicitly signals that information has been removed, making it clear that data is protected.

Redaction approaches include: Full Redaction (completely removing sensitive fields), Partial Redaction (showing only portions like last 4 digits of SSN), Pattern Redaction (replacing characters with asterisks: ***-**-1234), and Conditional Redaction (redacting based on user roles, data classifications, or regulatory requirements). Redaction is commonly used for displaying sensitive data in user interfaces.

Redaction is particularly valuable for: Unstructured data like documents and PDFs where masking techniques don't apply well, User interfaces that display customer information to CSRs, Log files that might contain sensitive data, Reports that need to show data structure without revealing values, and Compliance scenarios where you must demonstrate data protection (audit trails showing [REDACTED] clearly indicate protection).

Challenges with redaction for test data include: Reduced data usability (applications may fail with missing values), Difficult to maintain referential integrity (foreign keys need actual values), Not suitable for relational database testing where field values drive logic, and Obvious indication of data manipulation. For test databases, substitution or masking with fake realistic values is generally preferred over redaction.

Common Use Cases

  • Document and PDF protection
  • Log file sanitization
  • User interface data display
  • Audit report generation
  • Third-party document sharing

🎯How GoMask Helps

GoMask provides data redaction capabilities alongside masking for scenarios where explicit removal indication is required. However, for test databases we recommend substitution masking over redaction to maintain application functionality and referential integrity.
