Load Testing
Quick Definition
The process of testing application performance under expected and peak load conditions to identify bottlenecks and ensure scalability.
What is Load Testing?
Load testing is a type of performance testing that evaluates how applications behave under expected user loads and traffic patterns. Load tests simulate multiple concurrent users accessing the application, executing transactions, and generating database queries to measure response times, throughput, resource utilization, and system stability. The goal is to identify performance bottlenecks, validate scalability assumptions, and ensure the system meets performance requirements before production deployment.
Load testing scenarios vary by objectives: baseline testing (normal load conditions to establish performance benchmarks), stress testing (pushing beyond normal capacity to find breaking points), spike testing (sudden traffic increases), soak testing (sustained load over extended periods to identify memory leaks or degradation), and scalability testing (validating performance as resources are added). Load testing tools like JMeter, Gatling, k6, and LoadRunner generate synthetic user traffic and measure system behavior.
Realistic test data is critical for accurate load testing. Tests need production-like data volumes-small test datasets won't reveal query performance issues that only appear at scale. Data must have realistic distributions and access patterns-if production queries have complex joins across large tables, test data needs similar complexity. Using production data copies for load testing is often impractical (size, compliance) and risky. Synthetic data generation can create production-scale datasets for load testing without compliance concerns, enabling realistic performance validation.
