RBAC (Role-Based Access Control)
Quick Definition
A security model that restricts system access based on user roles, where permissions are assigned to roles rather than individual users.
What is RBAC (Role-Based Access Control)?
Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) is an access control mechanism that assigns permissions to roles rather than to individual users. Users are then assigned to one or more roles, inheriting the permissions associated with those roles. This approach simplifies permission management in large organizations by grouping users with similar access needs into roles like "Developer," "QA Engineer," "Database Administrator," or "Compliance Officer."
RBAC is based on three primary principles: role assignment (users must be assigned roles to gain permissions), role authorization (users can only activate roles they are assigned), and permission authorization (users can only execute operations for which they have permission through their active roles). RBAC also supports role hierarchies where senior roles inherit permissions from junior roles, and separation of duties where conflicting roles cannot be assigned to the same user.
For test data management, RBAC determines who can generate synthetic data, mask production data, provision test environments, or access sensitive data discovery results. Proper RBAC implementation ensures developers can self-service test data within appropriate boundaries while preventing unauthorized access to sensitive production data or compliance-critical operations. RBAC is a key requirement for SOC 2, ISO 27001, and most compliance frameworks.
Common Use Cases
- Enterprise access management
- Multi-tenant SaaS applications
- Test data platform access control
- Compliance audit requirements
🎯How GoMask Helps
GoMask implements granular RBAC to control who can discover sensitive data, configure masking rules, generate synthetic data, and provision environments. Roles can be customized to match your organization's structure, ensuring developers have self-service access while maintaining security and compliance.
